Rio de Janeiro Kilometre Zero
Monumento a la Libertad Americana, Santiago
The zero km marker for Rio de Janeiro is in front of the Monumento a Rui Barbosa in the Praça do Expedicionário.
If you’ve ever visited South America, you’ll know how delightful and helpful the locals are with visitors. Nothing is too much. However, that sometimes brings with it a couple of beige flags, most notably that they want to help so much that they sometimes won’t admit they simply don’t know something.
That’s the trap I fell into having not been to South America for over 40 years. We were led a merry dance trying to find the Zero KM for Rio de Janeiro. A trip that could have taken just a couple of hours turned into a six hour drive around some of the worse parts of the city.
Nevertheless, we did finally locate the Zero KM at 22°54'24.5"S 43°10'22.2"W in front of the Monumento a Rui Barbosa in the Praça do Expedicionário.
It is from here that all distances to Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, are measured.
